‘Let him die,’ thought Nnedi. Karma had been bench pressing in preparation for years; it was about time it struck Theo down. Besides, she wasn’t afraid of death. In fact, now she welcomed it.
“It’s not like I have anything left to live for,” she whispered, pressing her ear against Sacha’s silent chest.
How she wished she could just lie there and wait for death to overcome her. She wanted to curl up against Sacha’s lifeless body and wait to meet him in the afterlife.
They, however, weren’t about to let her.
They appeared out of nowhere, formless shadows circling overhead as they howled and screeched with hollow voices that sent goosebumps skittering across her skin.
The first one dove down and grabbed her but she swatted it away with her arm.
“No! I don’t want to go!” Nnedi cried, clinging to Sacha. “Let me die by his side!”
Offended, the creature shrieked in her ear then shot up into the air to join its brethren in the pulsating cloud they had formed.
Her defiance angered them. Nnedi braced herself for the onslaught.
Shadow after swooped down to try pry her away from her anchor. Where they touched, her skin became dark and singed. The damage healed in seconds but not before forcing a tortured scream from Nnedi’s lips.
Nnedi gritted her teeth and held on. No way was she doing their bidding this time. She wanted to die too; they had to let her this time.
But in spite of her stubbornness, she knew the inevitable was about to happen. And it did.
The thick cloud fell to earth as they came down all at once. They engulfed her and with one savage pull, ripped her away.
“NO!” she screamed as she was hoisted into the air.
She struggled against them but it was too late. They vanished.
And so did Nnedi.
